Is an electric scooter actually cheaper than driving for a short trip?

Often, for trips it genuinely replaces, but 'often' isn't a number you can budget against. The commute cost calculator on this site runs the comparison on your own mileage, purchase price and what you currently pay for the same trip by car, transit or rideshare.

Why is my real range so much lower than the advertised number?

Advertised range is typically measured on flat ground, at a moderate constant speed, with a lighter rider than average. Hills, cold weather, stop-and-go city riding and your own weight all reduce real range, sometimes by a third or more. The range estimator on this site runs your own conditions.

Can I ride an e-scooter on the sidewalk?

It depends entirely on your city — some explicitly allow sidewalk riding at low speed, many prohibit it outright, and rules can differ block to block near schools or business districts. Check your specific city's current ordinance rather than assuming a blanket answer.

Do I need a license or registration for a personal e-scooter?

In most states, a personally owned low-speed electric scooter under typical power and speed thresholds does not require a driver's license or registration, but a growing number of states and cities do require a minimum age, and some require helmets for riders under a certain age. Check your specific state and city rules.

What's the actual weight limit, and does it matter?

Yes, meaningfully — a scooter's rated weight limit is a real engineering ceiling, not a rough suggestion, and includes rider plus anything carried. Riding regularly near or over the limit accelerates wear on the motor, deck and suspension, and can reduce both range and control.

How is e-scooter theft different from bicycle theft?

Scooters are smaller, lighter and often foldable, which makes them easier to simply carry away rather than needing to be cut free — a cable lock or a lock through the frame alone does less than it would on a bike. A scooter-specific chain or plate lock, secured to a fixed object, addresses this differently than standard bike locks do.
